South Carolina as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of South Carolina reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

People have lived in what is now South Carolina for 15,000 years. Subsisting on big game as well as shellfish, peoples of the coastal regions and the plateaus further inland developed a robust trade network. In time, dozens of nations, now arbitrarily divided into major language families, lived within the borders of the modern-day state. Algonquian speaking tribes lived in the low country while Siouian speaking peoples lived in the plateau and Iroquian speaking peoples lived further upland. Additionally, the Cusabo group of tribes developed a distinct language from these major families. The Waccamaw (“People of the Fallen Star”) lived in the area around Lake Waccamaw, cultivating crops and domesticating deer. The Waccamaw made cheese from does’ milk and kept community gardens where all were expected to work and contribute.
