The state of Ohio reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

The peoples who populated present-day Ohio were connected to tribes throughout the continent through a vast trading network that brought blades from rock formations near Yellowstone, ornaments from the Gulf of Mexico, and shells from the Atlantic Seaboard. The Adena and Hopewell cultures build mounds and today, there are still more than 10,000 large earthen works in Southern Ohio alone, with one enormous fortification that has a circumference of 3.5 miles and encloses 100 acres. In the Hopewell era, people gathered in dense cities with thousands of residents each. Later, tribes such as the Delaware as well as various Iroquian and Algonquian speaking peoples moved into the area, driven westward. The Seneca-Cayuga settled in northern Ohio for a time before being forcibly removed once more to their present location in Oklahoma. The word Ohio comes from an Iroquian word that means “good river.”
