New Hampshire as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of New Hampshire reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

The area that is now New Hampshire was inhabited by the Abenaki (“People of the Dawn Land”), a loose grouping of smaller tribes and bands as well as the Pennacook Confederacy. The Abenaki lived throughout most of what is now New England as well as parts of present-day Canada. The name of the Pennacook came from the Abenaki word penakuk which means “at the bottom of the hill.” The confederacy included more than a dozen tribes which were, at various times hostile to or allied with the Abenaki peoples to their north. Over time, some members were absorbed into the Abenaki. Today some of their descendants are seeking federal recognition as the Cowasuck Band of the Pennacook Abenaki People.
