Nevada as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of Nevada reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

Human settlements have existed in Nevada for more than 20,000 years, leaving behind cave writings and ancient basketwork. The area that is now Nevada was home a number of tribes in the pre-colonial era including the Paiute, Newe, Wasiw, and Mojave. The Wasiw (Washoe) lived in the area around Da’aw (Lake Tahoe) and adapted to the scarcity of resources by moving throughout the land in a cyclical manner to take advantage of seasonal changes in the lake and surrounding landscape. The Newe (Shoshone) were widespread throughout what is now the American West. The Western Shoshone, with whom the Paiute were closely linked, lived in central Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho. Their bands are usually named for their traditional geographical homelands and primary food sources. Today there are thirty two Indian Reservations and Colonies across Nevada.
