Montana as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of Montana reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

Indigenous peoples have lived in what is now Montana for more than 12,000 years. The earliest known burial site in North America is located near present day Wilsall, Montana. The Apsaalooke (“children of the large-beaked bird,” also known as the Crow) originated in the Great Lakes area along with other Siouan peoples but eventually moved westward. They settled in the area between what is now Yellowstone National Park and the headwaters of the Yellowstone River, which they called Elk River. The Siksikaitsitapi (“Blackfoot speaking people,” also known as the Blackfoot Confederacy) controlled a large territory that stretched through present-day Alberta and to the Yellowstone River, which the Blackfoot called Otahkoiitahtayi. Today, the Blackfeet Nation is a federally recognized tribe and has been working to protect the Badger-Two Medicine region.
