The state of Mississippi reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

Human habitation in the area that is now Minnesota goes back more than 9,000 years. During that time, peoples who lived in the region developed metalworking, cultivated rice, and built over 10,000 burial bounds. Their descendants became the Dakota. The Dakota are a Siouan people and are commonly divided into the Santee, who live in the Dakotas and central Minnesota and the Wichiyena (“those who speak like men” or Yankton), who live in the Upper Missouri River area. The name of the state comes from Dakota words “mni sota” which means “clear blue water” and was their name for the Minnesota River. The Chippewa (Ojibwe) are an Anishinaabe people and belonged to the Council of Three Fires as well as the Iron Confederacy.
