Maine as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of Maine reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

People have lived in the area that is now Maine for thousands of years. The Wabanaki Confederacy (“People of the Dawn”) consisted of five nations: the Mi’kamq (concept similar to “the family”, Wolastoqiyik (“People of the Beautiful River” or Maliseet), Passamaquoddy (“those of the place where pollock are plentiful”), Abenaki, and Penobscot (derived from a word which means “rocky part”). The confederacy lived throughout present day Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and some parts of Canada. The Wabanaki spoke an Algonquian language and each individual tribe had its own governing structure. Though the confederacy disbanded in the 1860s, the nations continue to remain close allies. Today the Aroostook Band of Micmac, Houlton Band of Maliseet, Penobscot Nation, and Passamaquoddy Tribe continue to live in what is now Maine, just as they have for thousands of years.
