The state of Louisiana reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

The area that is now the state of Louisiana is home to one of the earliest mound complexes that’s been dated. Nearby is a spot known as Poverty Point, a 402-acre site that might have been used as a settlement, trading center, and religious complex. The descendants of these peoples as well as the later Plaquemine and Caddoan Mississippian cultures formed a variety of political entities such as the Caddo Confederacy, Natchez, and Ishak (“the people” or Atapaka). The Caddo Confederacy tribes inhabited the eastern part of modern-day Texas, Louisiana and portions of Arkansas. The Natchez lived in the Lower Mississippi Valley and continue to govern themselves according to traditional methods. The Ishak divided into two populations known as the “sunrise people” and the “sunset people” and lived on the coast of what is now Texas and Louisiana.
