New Jersey as a fantasy map
A downloadable map
The state of New Jersey reimagined as a fantasy map. This map is part of the Integral States Project, an art series that encourages reflection about the actual, pre-colonial history of these landscapes as well as the indigenous peoples who called them home. Proceeds benefit native charities.

As soon as the ice sheets retreated, peoples moved into present-day New Jersey. These first peoples hunted megafauna and moved their temporary settlements when food became scarce. Their descendants became the Lennni-Lenape (“men of men” or “original person”), who were an Algonquian speaking people and lived throughout New Jersey, Delaware, southern New York and eastern Pennsylvania. They were close relatives of the nearby Nanticoke and many Algonquian peoples along the East Coast considered the Lenape “grandfathers” from which other peoples originated. The Lenape have three clans, each with twelve sub-clans. The Lenape were a farming people, harvesting corn, squash and beans as the main staples. Their language survives through tribal elders as well as in place names through the state.
